Essential Services- Designations
The Essential Services Committee has declared 18 services to be essential. They are-
- Air traffic control
- Blood transfusion services
- the blood transfusion services provided by the South African Blood Transfusion Services
- Courts services
- Department of Correctional Services
- Department of Defence civilian services
- Fire fighting
- Key-point computer services
- Local Authority Services
- municipal traffic services and policing;
- municipal health; and
- municipal security.
- Power
- Private Health Services funded by the public
- emergency health services and the provision of emergency health facilities to the community;
- nursing; and
- medical and paramedical services.
- Private Health Support Services funded by the public
- boiler; and
- water purification
- Public Health Services
- emergency health services and the provision of emergency health facilities to the community;
- nursing; and
- medical and paramedical services.
- Public Health Support Services
- catering;
- medical records;
- security;
- porter and reception;
- pharmaceutical and dispensary;
- medicine quality control laboratory;
- forensics;
- laundry;
- clinical engineering;
- hospital engineering;
- waste removal;
- mortuary; and
- pest control.
- Sanitation Services
- maintenance and operation of water-borne sewerage systems, including the control of the discharge of industrial effluent into the system;
- maintenance and operation of sewerage - purification works;
- collection of organic refuse;
- collection of infectious refuse from medical and veterinary hospitals or clinics;
- collection and disposal of refuse at a disposal site;
and
- collection of refuse left uncollected for 14 days or longer, including domestic refuse and refuse on public roads and open spaces.
- Social Pensions Payments
- Water
- supply and distribution of water; and
- security services of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.
- Welfare Registered Nursing Homes:
- emergency health services and the provision of emergency health facilities;
- nursing; and
- medical and paramedical services.
- Welfare Registered Nursing Homes Support Services:
- physiotherapy;
- dispensary;
- catering;
- laundry;
- boiler;
- transport; and
- security.
