My employer screams at me at work. I am doing my best but she still gives me a hard time. What can I do?

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re going through this. Being treated poorly at work can be very stressful and demoralizing. Here are some steps you can take to address the situation:

    1. Document Everything: Keep a detailed record of all incidents, including dates, times, what was said or done, and any witnesses. This documentation can be crucial if you need to take formal action later.
    2. Communicate: If you feel safe doing so, try to have a calm and private conversation with your employer. Explain how their behavior is affecting you and your work. Sometimes, people are not aware of the impact of their actions.
    3. Seek Support: Talk to a trusted colleague, friend, or family member about what you’re experiencing. They can offer emotional support and may provide useful advice.
    4. Check Company Policies: Review your company’s policies on workplace behavior and harassment. There may be procedures in place for reporting and addressing such issues.
    5. Report the Behavior: If the behavior continues, consider reporting it to your HR department or a higher authority within your organization. Provide them with your documentation and any other relevant information.
    6. External Help: If internal reporting does not resolve the issue, you can seek help from external bodies such as the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) or a relevant Bargaining Council. They can provide guidance and support in dealing with workplace disputes.
    7. Legal Advice: In severe cases, it might be beneficial to seek legal advice from a labour lawyer who can help you understand your rights and the best course of action.

Remember, you have the right to a safe and respectful work environment. If you need more specific advice or assistance, join Labour Protect and we can monitor and assist as things carry on at work.
