If you are experiencing harassment at work in South Africa, here are some steps you can take:

    1. Document the Harassment: Keep detailed records of all incidents, including dates, times, locations, and any witnesses. This documentation will be crucial if you need to file a formal complaint or take the issue futher.
    2. Report the Harassment: Inform your employer or HR department about the harassment. Employers are required by law to address and prevent harassment in the workplace. The new Code of Good Practice on the Prevention and Elimination of Harassment, effective from March 2022, outlines employers’ obligations.
    3. Seek Support: Talk to a trusted colleague, friend, or family member about what you are experiencing. You can also seek support from employee assistance programs if available.
    4. File a Formal Complaint: If the harassment continues or if your employer does not take appropriate action, you can file a complaint with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) or a relevant Bargaining Council.
    5. Legal Advice: Consider seeking legal advice from a labor lawyer to understand your rights and the best course of action.  Labour Protect can assist you further if you are a member:  Join Labour Protect
    6. External Resources: Utilize resources such as the South African Human Rights Commission or organizations that specialize in workplace harassment and discrimination.

Harassment in the workplace is taken seriously under South African law, and there are mechanisms in place to protect you. You no longer have to put up with harassment and can put an end to it if you choose…
