KeymasterI have been working in the same company for almost 4 years. When I started the company wanted me to do secretarial work. It was quite methodical but I liked the work. Now there has been a change in management and they have given me a new role and responsibilities. They have not increased my salary but they expect more from me. Must they change my contact and give me an increase?

KeymasterIn South Africa, if your job title changes, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need a completely new contract.
However, there are some important considerations:
– Consultation and Agreement:
Employers cannot unilaterally change the terms and conditions of employment, including job titles, without consulting the employee.
Any changes should be mutually agreed upon and ideally documented.
– Written Confirmation:
While a new contract might not be required, the changes should be confirmed in writing. This can be done through an addendum to the existing contract or a formal letter outlining the new job title and any associated changes in duties or responsibilities.
– Material Changes:
If the change in job title comes with significant changes in duties, responsibilities, or other terms of employment, it is best to update the contract to reflect these changes. If you are happy with what is going on, don’t rock the boat. Raise your concerns with your employer and maybe they can accommodate your need for clarity and and consider an increase.
