I need to take urgent sick leave but only have been working for my new boss for 10 days.  How do I go about getting sick leave.  Do I have to get permission or just miss the day and deal with it when I get back.

The right to take sick leave is set out in the Basic Conditions of Employment Act…

Yes, you can take sick leave in the first month of your new employment. However, during the first six months of employment, you are entitled to only one day of paid sick leave for every 26 days worked. This means that if you need to take sick leave within your first month, you will accrue sick leave based on the number of days you have worked.

Don’t abuse sick leave as this will certainly result in you getting into trouble and could effect your path in the organisation…
